Define City Service/Application

An application is a digital tool, monitoring application, application module, or another deployable component, designed to perform a group of coordinated functions, tasks, or activities for the benefit of the city users (Hefnawy et al. 2016). This activity aims to capture the applications which support a city service. Various applications can be designed and implemented with the support of Cloud and Fog computing, including applications for intelligent transportation systems, smart energy systems, infrastructure and environment monitoring, and public safety applications, etc. (Nitti et al. 2017).

Relationship

  • Is realized through (City Service, Application): A city service is realized through different smart city applications.

History

Various smart city applications have been designed and implemented with the support of Cloud and Fog computing. The applications support city services for intelligent transportation, smart energy, infrastructure and environment monitoring, and public safety applications, etc. (Nitti et al. 2017).

Examples

  • Taxi drivers use a smart transportation application installed on their smartphones or tablets to know the real-time weather information from environment services, combined with traffic information from smart traffic services (Hefnawy et al. 2016)
  • Smart city applications based on participatory sensing to support distributed data collection in sports events. Data is gathered by supporters and fans of football. The mobile application focuses on the online (real-time) supporters watching the match in the stadium. The desktop application is a media player program that enables offline users to annotate matches more specifically than a normal media player can do. (Filipponi et al. 2010)
